The Mission of the Legislative Affairs Committee is to develop strategies to influence relevant policies in the aging field and geriatric education, which reflect the goals of NAGE and its members. With the assistance of the NAGE public policy advisor, the committee's work includes, but is not limited to, monitoring policy and legislation, educating and advocating on behalf of NAGE, communicating with NAGE leadership and members, and mobilizing membership. In order to collaborate with other National Organizations with similar educational interests and who are in support of care for older adults, NAGE is an active member of the following organizations:
Health Professions and Nursing Education Coalition (HPNEC)

The Health Professions and Nursing Education Coalition (HPNEC) is an informal alliance of more than 60 organizations representing a variety of schools, programs, health professionals and students dedicated to educating professional health personnel. Together, the members of HPNEC advocate for adequate and continued support for the health professions and nursing education programs authorized under Titles VII and VIII of the Public Health Service Act. The members of the Coalition believe these programs are essential to the development and training of tomorrow's health professionals and are critical to providing continued health services to underserved and minority communities.
Eldercare Workforce Alliance (EWA)

The Eldercare Workforce Alliance is a group of 28 national organizations, joined together to address the immediate and future workforce crisis in caring for an aging America. The Institute of Medicine, in its critical report "Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce," called for immediate investments in preparing our health care system to care for all older adults and their families. In response, the national Eldercare Workforce Alliance was formed -representing consumers, family caregivers, the direct-care workforce, and healthcare professionals-to propose practical solutions to strengthen our eldercare workforce and improve the quality of care.
To address our nation's worsening eldercare crisis, the Alliance is working to build a caring and competent eldercare workforce, joining in partnership with older adults, their families and other unpaid caregivers-to provide high-quality, culturally-sensitive, person-directed, family-focused care, and improve the quality of life for older adults and their families.
Partnership for Health in Aging (PHA)
The overall mission of PHA is to develop and coordinate advocacy strategies to assure needed support to prepare the formal and informal caregiving workforce to provide quality care for America's aging population and to ensure the financial feasibility of providing that care.. In June 2008, the American Geriatrics Society convened a meeting of 21 organizations representing healthcare professionals who care for older adults to discuss how these organizations could work together to advance recommendations from the 2008 Institute of Medicine Report, “Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce”, and to advocate for ways to meet the healthcare needs of the nation's rapidly growing older population. This meeting led to the development of a loose coalition--the Partnership for Health in Aging (PHA)--that identified as its first step the development of a set of core competencies in the care of older adults that are relevant to and can be endorsed by all health professional disciplines. A subsequent project has focused on expanding interdisciplinary teamwork training in geriatrics.
